Some things are worth the time and effort of making from scratch and, to me, mashed potatoes is one of them. Nothing beats that creamy, fluffy texture of homemade mashed potatoes. Instant mashed potatoes have their place (kind of- haha), but they often come out more gluey and runny than you'd like. My garlic mashed potatoes are a great side dish from a quick weeknight meal to an elaborate holiday feast. They are one of those things that seem to always have a place at the table.

Using High Quality Ingredients
Mashed potatoes are the kind of recipe where you want to be intentional about your ingredients. They are so simple that using high quality ingredients are worth it. Think, fresh garlic (not jarred), high quality butter and salt, etc. Because of their simplicity, it is fun to try slight variations and see how they effect the final dish. Try different types of salt, potatoes, or brands of butter. Let me know what you try and what your favorite is in the comments below.

Helpful Tools used in this Recipe
- Ricer - WAY better than a hand mixer. A ricer will leave you mashed potatoes as smooth as ever! Also...this ricer has a life time warranty 😉
- Hexclad Pots - Although pricey.. a Hexclad pot is worth every penny. You'll have them forever and come with a life time warranty.
- Strainer - I love using my metal strainer over my plastic ones any day! They are more sturdy and handle heat great.
- Flint and Flame Knives - USE Code CHEFTIM40 to get 40% this knife or their entire website
Ingredients you'll need:
- 5 Cloves Garlic (minced)
- 5 lb Potatoes
- 8 oz Butter (2 sticks)
- 1 ¼ Cups Heavy Cream
- 2 Tablespoons Salt
- ½ Tablespoon White Pepper
- Chives for Topping (optional)
Instructions for Mashed Potatoes:

Step 1 : Mince garlic and set aside. Wash and peel potatoes. Cut potatoes into 1 ½ inch cubes.

Step 2 : Place potatoes in stock pot with water. Bring to a low boil and add 1 ½ tablespoon of salt and dissolve. Bring to a rolling boil and then cook for 10-12 minutes.

Step 3 : Melt butter in a separate stock pot on medium heat. Once melted, add in garlic and cook for 2 minutes. Then, add in heavy cream and put on low heat to keep cream and butter mixture warm. You don't want cold cream or butter going into the potatoes.

Step 4 : Strain potatoes and let sit for 5 minutes. Then, use your potato ricer OR hand mixer to mash the potatoes.

Step 5 : Pour the butter mixture and remaining salt and pepper into the mashed potatoes and stir until creamy.
Step 6 : Top with Chives, serve and enjoy!
